Today, the Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR) released On the Ballot: Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office Tax Renewal, May 3, 2025. The report provides an independent, nonpartisan analysis of a proposition to renew an existing 2.46-mill property tax for the Sheriff’s Office for another 10 years. The tax would continue to provide about $12.7 million a year to supplement funding from the City of New Orleans for the operations, maintenance, and upkeep of the Orleans Parish jail. BGR finds that continuing this tax would help sustain jail operations at current levels as the Sheriff’s Office seeks to address staffing and facility needs and improve compliance with court-ordered reforms. Based on our analysis, BGR takes a position in favor of the proposed tax renewal, with suggestions for improving public transparency, accountability, and long-term financial stability for the jail.
