NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Sheriff is urging voters to renew a current tax mileage on the May 3 ballot.
Sheriff Huston says the money from the millage will go toward critical programs, maintenance and staffing.
The law enforcement district millage is up for renewal after 10 years. If renewed the tax will extend for another decade.
According to Hutson, the millage will secure $13.1 million in annual funding and not increase taxes. Hutson says if passed the money will be spent toward public safety, reentry programs, staffing, facility maintenance, and mental health services.
Huston says she fears if the millage fails to renew the jail can face shortages and stop much needed repairs.
A report from the Bureau of Governmental Research shows the tax provides the second largest funding source for the jail at about 13%.
