New Orleans voters are set to elect City Council representatives for four out of five of the city’s districts this election cycle.
Why it matters: When most residents struggle with a municipal issue — like, say, a pothole that never gets filled or a trouble-making neighborhood business — they call their district council member to get it solved.
Driving the news: Early voting runs Sept. 27 through Oct. 4.
- The primary is Oct. 11 and runoffs are Nov. 15.
The big picture: Representatives for all five of the city’s council districts — A, B, C, D and E — are up for reelection this year, but one ran unopposed.
- That means voters in Councilwoman Lesli Harris’ District B have already had their decision made for them. Go deeper.
Between the lines: Residents will vote along new district lines this year after 2020 census numbers required they be redrawn. See the new maps.
District A is currently held by Joe Giarrusso, who decided not to run again.
- Taking his place will be Alex Mossing, Bob Murrell, Bridget Neal or one of Giarrusso’s former staffers, Holly Friedman or Aimee McCarron.
District C incumbent Freddie King III is running again.
- He faces competition from Algiers Economic Development Foundation executive director Kelsey Foster, Jackson Kimbrell and Eliot Barron.
District D is represented now by Eugene Green, who hopes to keep his seat.
- He faces challengers in the form of Leilani Heno and Belden “Noonie Man” Batiste, who led Cantrell’s recall campaign.
District E is wide open thanks to Councilman Oliver Thomas’ choice to run for mayor instead.
- A long slate of candidates hope to fill his seat. Top challengers include Cyndi Nguyen, who held it previously, and State Rep. Jason Hughes.
