Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signs executive order to create a task force for SWBNO

BATON ROUGE, La. — An executive order has been signed by Gov. Jeff Landry that would create a Governor’s Task Force for the Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans.

The task force will include 14 members who will review the billing process, governing structure and the management and organizational structure of SWBNO.

The governor’s office says the task force will determine if a different governing structure or reorganization exist and will work to maximize efficiency within SWBNO.

“Those who live in New Orleans are far too familiar with the frequent failures of the Sewerage and Water Board. Widespread flooding and drinking water violations have become second nature to folks in Orleans Parish. The current operating status of the Sewerage and Water Board is not acceptable,” said Governor Jeff Landry.

Sewage and Water Board New Orleans issued a statement in regards to Gov. Landry’s executive order:

“The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) welcomes the attention to our utility and our city’s critical needs. We understand the importance of restoring public trust and are encouraged by the alignment of our priorities with that of the Governor’s New Orleans Transition Council.

We appreciate the opportunity to delve into our major initiatives, discuss challenges, and identify areas for collaboration with our local, state, and federal partners. The Bureau of Governmental Research recently proposed several compelling options as it relates to our current governance model.

Regarding customer billing, we are steadily resolving the primary obstacle: manual meter reading. To date, we have installed over 4,000 smart meters citywide and anticipate full installation for all customers within the next few years. This modern, industry-proven technology will automatically generate bills that reflect actual water usage, essentially eliminating unexpected high bills resulting from inaccurate estimations. Improvements in this area will help us elevate public trust and bring financial stability to the utility. We welcome any support in this area in the interim.

We also appreciate the committee’s support for the Power Complex, which will provide New Orleans with a reliable power source for our drainage and drinking water systems. For stormwater management, this infrastructure upgrade is essential as we move away from aging turbines. The Power Complex will utilize modern power generation technology that will give our customers and visitors peace of mind during major rain events and hurricanes.
