BGR Research Analyst

BGR Research Analyst

BGR is hiring. As a Research Analyst, you will help shape public conversations, influence real policy decisions, and support better government throughout greater New Orleans.

WHO WE ARE

The Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR) is a nonprofit, independent research organization dedicated to informed public policymaking and the effective use of public resources in greater New Orleans. We are a constructive, nonpartisan, objective voice in the local policy landscape.

Since 1932, BGR has worked to make government more effective, efficient, transparent, and accountable. We educate citizens and policymakers and often provide the foundation for meaningful policy achievements across our region. We have a long legacy of research excellence.

THE RESEARCH WE DO

Our work has never been more essential. BGR’s nonideological orientation is increasingly rare — we follow the facts and best practices wherever they lead. We bring citizens together, support voters at election time, and offer well-researched solutions to help build a brighter future for our region.

Research Analysts contribute across a wide portfolio that typically includes:

  • Government administration and structure
  • Government finance
  • Infrastructure
  • Essential services and core systems, such as public schools, recreation, and the justice system
  • Public involvement in the private sector, including economic development and tax exemptions

WHAT YOU WILL DO

BGR’s Research Analysts are central to our mission. You will produce reports that deliver solutions to critical public policy issues by locating and analyzing authoritative sources, attending public meetings, interviewing subject matter experts, and writing for public audiences. Analysts often become subject matter experts within the organization.

You will also help communicate findings and recommendations to the public, news media, community groups, civic leaders, and policymakers. Throughout, you’ll work with experienced leadership and be part of a team committed to the transformative potential of BGR’s work.

In your first year, you will:

  • Lead at least one major research project from start to publication
  • Produce timely, shorter publications on emerging policy issues
  • Build working knowledge of key local government entities
  • Present findings publicly with support from leadership and communications staff

Our research is evidence-informed and draws on methods including:

  • Policy & legal analysis (authority, structure, best practices)
  • Comparative research (peer jurisdictions, alternative approaches)
  • Financial & data analysis (budgets, financial statements, datasets, visualizations)
  • Contextual research (historical, economic, social factors)

You will also monitor governmental entities and the Louisiana Legislature for significant policy developments, tracking agendas, attending meetings, gathering information, and reporting back to the research team. This helps BGR identify new opportunities and deliver timely commentary when appropriate.

You will receive close feedback from experienced researchers and have access to professional development opportunities. You’ll also collaborate with BGR’s Director of Communications and Engagement to help share key findings and support implementation. Examples of communications support include highlighting key takeaways for research briefs, accompanying BGR’s President on media interviews and public presentations, and participating in videos about your report.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We’re seeking a strong researcher, writer, and critical thinker who thrives in a collaborative environment and embraces BGR’s independent, nonpartisan mission.

Professional Experience. Experience conducting policy research, whether through professional roles, internships, fellowships, or related work. Exposure to both research and public communications is valued. Experience with public policy organizations is a plus.

  • Analyze complex topics objectively
  • Integrate information and data into relevant insights
  • Demonstrate interest in municipal government, public finance, and economics
  • Uphold high ethical standards
  • Manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a small team

BGR is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We encourage applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, even if they do not meet every qualification listed.

HOW WE WORK

BGR offers a predictable hybrid schedule that balances focused research time, collaboration, and work-life balance. Staff work in person at our downtown New Orleans office at least two days a week, with remote work optional on the other days. New hires can shift to a hybrid schedule after an initial period of in-office work to build relationships with colleagues and learn more about BGR’s methods and approach.

The expected salary range for this Research Analyst position is $60,000 up to $90,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. BGR offers employees competitive benefits, including health/vision/dental insurance, a retirement plan with organizational match, and paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
