NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) – Leaders from the Convention Center are set to make their case for a proposed hotel on the river.

It could cost hundreds of millions of dollars in public money.

The Convention center argues that investing in a hotel near their location on the river would only stand to benefit New Orleans in the long run. Mayor LaToya Cantrell doesn’t think it’s a wise investment right now.

A meeting  at 2 p.m. Wednesday will go over the potential economic benefits of the proposed hotel, which The Bureau of Governmental Research says would cost about $330 million in public money.
Convention Center leaders argue it would attract more people to New Orleans who would in turn spend money.

Cantrell has raised concerns in the past about the subsidy the project would receive at a time when the city is desperate for basic improvements geared toward the residents, not the visitors.

“We need our resources that are generated off the backs of our hard working people in the industry to be reinvested in the City of New Orleans,” said Cantrell. “We currently have a physical infrastructure problem and we also have a human infrastructure problem. We need to reinvest in the City of New Orleans and so I am not for any revenue generated here going to subside a hotel again on free land. No taxes due. We cannot afford it.”
