With early voting for the May 4 election underway, the Bureau of Governmental Research again has released its report from last year opposing tolls on the Crescent City Connection. The nonprofit makes no changes from its August examination that recommends voters in New Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes vote against the measure that would keep tolls on the bridge for 20 years.

In March, the tolls were suspended and a new vote on the issue was ordered after a Baton Rouge judge ruled the November referendum that favored continuation of the tolls by a slim margin was questionable. A Harvey civic activist had challenged that outcome, arguing that hundreds of voters were denied their right to vote on the issue when they were given provisional ballots that lacked local elections and could have cast ballots against the proposition.

In deciding its position against the tolls, BGR cited “the scope of the electorate, the vagueness of the proposition and uncertainty about what the public would receive with tolls, versus what it would receive without them.’‘

Officials have said the tolls generate as much as $22 million annually.
