Watchdogs call for amending Jindal’s education plan

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Three government watchdog groups say Gov. Bobby Jindal’s plan to let more Louisiana students go to private schools at government expense needs amendments to make sure the private schools are accountable to taxpayers.

The groups weighed in as a House panel began work Wednesday on Jindal’s ambitious legislative program.

The high profile organizations calling for changes to Jindal’s plan included the Council for a Better Louisiana and The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana, which said the bill appears to allow social promotion of public school students who transfer to private schools using the government vouchers.

The New Orleans-based Bureau of Governmental Research had similar complaints.

Proponents and opponents aired their views in long meeting of the House Education Committee, which was in its seventh hour Wednesday afternoon.
