Arne Duncan, U.S. education secretary since 2009, will be the featured speaker Dec. 11 at the annual luncheon of the Bureau of Governmental Research.

BGR is a nonprofit watchdog group that analyzes public policy and resource use in greater New Orleans. It has pushed for reform in the city’s civil service system and an end to what it considers overstaffing in the judiciary. In the education realm, it called attention to the Orleans Parish School Board’s management and tracking of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Duncan criticized Gov. Bobby Jindal’s lawsuit against the Common Core academic standards last month, dismissing it as political gamesmanship. He was most recently seen in New Orleans painting school signs and earning 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists at the NBA Celebrity All-Star Game.

Tickets for the luncheon start at $100.
