NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans non-profit group that researches government issues has won an award for recommendations it made to overhaul the way the City of New Orleans awards professional services contracts.

The Bureau of Governmental Research won the award at the recent national conference of the Government Research Association in Chicago.

The BGR was recognized for a March 2010 report that made recommendations for awarding contracts, including limiting the role of elected officials, oversight from the New Orleans inspector general and methods of monitoring performance.

Elements of the plan were included in a revamp of the contracting process that Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced last year.
