Mayor Landrieu plans to revamp 11 New Orleans boards and commissions

By Richard Rainey

Billing it as a strategy to streamline New Orleans’ large and labyrinthine government, Mayor Mitch Landrieu wants to make changes to 11 city boards and commissions, according to an administration news statement. The mayor didn’t identify which among the city’s scores of appointed posts he wants to restructure or which ones would meet the axe. Instead, he scheduled a 1 p.m. news conference to make his plans public.

The move comes at the start of what are certain to be heated discussions about the mayor’s $491.4 million spending proposal for 2013. It also comes amid ongoing pressure from at least two government advisory groups to see the structure of the Sewerage & Water Board overhauled.

The Bureau of Governmental Research and the Citizen Sewer, Water and Drainage System Reform Task Force, a group of organized by banker and former water board member Gary Solomon, want the board to remove elected officials from the board, including three City Council members and the mayor, reducing its appointed seats from 13 to nine. They also want to see members’ nine-year terms reduced to either six years or four.

The S&WB’s executive committee has agreed to schedule more meetings on the matter as the full board and the mayor mull major rate hikes to pay for the city’s deteriorating water and sewer systems.
