NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The longtime leader of a New Orleans-based government watchdog group is stepping down after 14 years.

The Bureau of Governmental Research said Thursday that its president and CEO, Janet Howard, is resigning.

BGR said in a news release that a committee has been formed to manage the search for a new leader. Howard has agreed to stay on until her replacement is named.

BGR has taken stands on a number of issues in New Orleans over the years. One example is its strong support for consolidation of seven tax assessor positions in the city into one.
