Council Gives Go Ahead To New Accounts for Blakely

Council Gives Go Ahead To New Accounts for Blakely
9/6/2007

The NO City Council voted overwhelmingly to set up new bank accounts for handling over 100 million HUD redevelopment dollars.

The accounts were set up at the request of recovery coordinator Ed Blakely, in spite of concerns that the accounts may be used without sufficient oversight.

The Bureau of Governmental Research says approval of the accounts puts the cart before the horse.

Councilmember Shelley Midura expressed concerns that the new structure would eliminate council oversight.

Blakely assured everyone that no project would be approved without council approval, as well as approval from the state office of community development.

The measure passed overwhelmingly.

Blakely says the new accounts could begin receiving funds in two weeks.
