Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s Tax Fairness Commission held its first meeting today, with presentations by the city’s chief economist, Jerome Lomba, and Bureau of Governmental Research CEO Janet Howard. The presentations and ensuing discussion offered a rare level detail about the city’s various tax systems.

For example, the Superdome gets nearly one-third of the of the city’s 13 percent hotel-motel tax and the Board of Liquidation gets about 17 percent of all millages assessed in New Orleans.

Commission members also engaged each other in a conversation about the body’s role. There was general agreement that the commission should focus strictly on good government when making recommendations, as opposed to political viability. But members also grappled with their basic charge, which is to provide actionable suggestions that the Landrieu administration can lobby for in Baton Rouge.

Commission members recognize the clock is ticking: preliminary recommendations are due March 20, and final ones are due June 1. Meanwhile, an economist, who will be selected by the end of the week, must prepare an analysis by March 1.
