BGR Supports FQ Sales Tax Proposal

October 7 2015

The watchdog organization, Bureau of Governmental Research, is supporting a sales tax measure that French Quarter residents will consider in the October 24 election.

Voters will decide whether to approve a five-year 0.2495% sales tax to support supplemental public safety services for the neighborhood. The sales tax would generate an estimated $2 million in 2016 and it would expire at the end of 2020.

The revenue would be used to enhance security in the French Quarter and help fund the deployment of state troopers.

BGR says the French Quarter “is the heart of the city’s tourist economy” and that creating a sales tax to fund additional security would improve safety for residents and tourists alike.
