Port of New Orleans: President’s Perspective and Plans

On Thursday, May 18, Brandy D. Christian, Port of New Orleans President and CEO, spoke at a BGR Breakfast Briefing at IBERIABANK.

Ms. Christian gave an overview of the Port’s role in the local economy and global commerce, and laid out plans for the future. Highlights included discussion of the port’s economic impact, the future of the Avondale shipyard, privatization of the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, and the effects of local traffic congestion on the Port.

Mayor Landrieu’s 2017 Outlook

On Thursday, March 30, Mayor Landrieu spoke at a BGR Breakfast Briefing at IBERIABANK.

Mayor Landrieu discussed the accomplishments of his administration over the past seven years, including the work on the firefighter’s pension fund. He then discussed the remaining issues he plans to address before his term ends. One item on his agenda is non-profit property tax exemptions. BGR recently released an open letter on the state’s unusual nonprofit property tax exemptions, presenting a template for a constitutional amendment to bring the state’s exemptions in line with national norms. The mayor noted at several intervals BGR’s essential contributions to significant policy reforms.

Economic Trend Lines for a Changing Jefferson Parish

On Tuesday, December 6, Jerry Bologna (JEDCO President & CEO) and Robert Edgecombe (GCR, Inc. Urban Planner and Consultant) spoke at a BGR Breakfast Briefing in Jefferson Parish.

Edgecombe presented Jefferson Parish demographic trends in relation to regional and statewide trends. Bologna followed with JEDCO’s plans to respond to those trends with new housing, transportation, and employment strategies. Both focused on five growing industry clusters that offer economic development opportunities to the parish.
